We’ll make sure that your new tires are properly mounted, balanced, and aligned for optimum performance and safety on the road. Make Your Tires Last With Regular Tire Rotation

Maintaining even wear across all four tires is one of the most effective ways to get more miles from your tires. Our mechanics recommend that you have your tires rotated every 3,000 to 6,000 miles. It’s also a good idea to have them rotated at the same time you come into Hogan & Sons for your regular oil change service.

There are several signs you can watch for that may indicate it’s time for tire rotation service. Schedule an appointment with us if you notice your car or truck pulling to one side, vibrations in your steering wheel while driving, or uneven tread wear. In addition, if you frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, through road construction, over potholes, or on uneven terrain, you may need tire rotation more frequently.

Protect Your Vehicle With Our Tire Alignment Service

Tire alignment—also known as wheel alignment—is done to correct imbalances that cause your wheels to point in different directions. These imbalances can result in excessive tire wear or the failure of your vehicle’s suspension and even make your car or truck unsafe to drive.

Signs That It’s Time for New Tires

A quick check will tell you if your tires need to be replaced. Here’s what to do:

  • Look for tread wear and measure your tread depth. Just insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible, your tread is less than 1/16”, and the tire should be replaced. If you have radial tires, look at the tread wear indicator (also known as the tire wear bar) on your tires to see if it’s exposed; this is another sign that you need new tires.
  • Closely inspect each tire for damage, such as punctures or cracks. Note: If there is damage to a tire’s sidewall, you need to replace it as soon as you can.
  • Look for anything that’s embedded in your tires, such as rocks, nails, or small pieces of metal or glass.
  • Regularly check your tire pressure. You can expect all tires to lose about one pound per square inch every month; if your tires are losing pressure more quickly than that, you may need new tires.

How To Extend the Life of Your New Tires

You can make your investment in your tires go farther by taking a few simple steps, including:

  • Careful driving: Driving over uneven surfaces or potholes can’t always be avoided, but you can slow down. Tire manufacturers offer a recommendation for maximum speed, which helps reduce the extra heat that speeding causes and that results in premature tire wear. Cornering and braking hard also contribute to faster wear.
  • Tire rotation: Regular rotation goes a long way toward evening out tread wear and reducing the chance of deep wear in certain spots.
  • Tire balancing: Uneven wear due to the tires being out of balance can shorten the life of your tires.
  • Watching tire pressure: Use a high-quality gauge to check your tire pressure about once a month, or more often if you regularly put a lot of miles on your vehicle. Maintaining tire pressure within a range that keeps your tires from being overinflated or underinflated helps reduce excess tread wear. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommendation for proper inflation.
  • Reduce weight: Most tires are designed for normal, day-to-day driving. Unless you have tires on your car or truck that are rated for heavy weights, try to lighten the load on your tires by removing heavy items from your trunk or truck bed unless you’re transporting them. If you regularly tow a trailer, ask our tire shop technicians for their recommendation on the type of tire that’s best for you.

Virginia Tire Shop FAQs

Should you repair a tire or replace it?

A flat tire can put a damper in your daily plans, especially if you’re in a hurry or have a full schedule for the day. Your first thought may be to use some fix-a-flat or get it plugged or patched and get on with your day. But how can you tell if your tire can be repaired or if it’s time for it to be replaced?

Selecting the incorrect method could make the situation worse, and it could potentially put your safety at risk. Before taking action, some important things you should consider are:

  • How large the puncture is
  • Where the damage is located on the tire
  • How long it has been damaged

If the puncture is ¼” in diameter, it might be OK to repair. A nail or small screw in the tire tread is an easy tire repair for one of our tire mechanics. If the puncture is in the sidewall of the tire or the shoulder, it cannot be repaired safely, no matter how small the hole is. If the puncture is larger than ¼” in diameter, no matter the shape of the hole, the tire can’t be repaired properly. The belts inside the tire may be damaged.

If you still have questions, ask our service staff to help you either purchase a new tire or have it repaired at our tire shop.

It can be dangerous if you try to drive to a tire shop on a damaged tire. Today’s tires have shorter sidewalls and can be damaged quickly by the heat generated while you’re driving.

The tire mechanics at Hogan & Sons will remove the tire to determine if there is any damage that can’t be seen and then discuss with you the safest course of action. If your tires are still under warranty, a replacement may be free.

Do all four tires need to match?

That flat tire you found when you went out to get in the car today leads to some other questions: Can you replace just that one tire or do you need to lay out the money for two or even four new tires?

It’s a good question. Good tires are not inexpensive and most people don’t routinely budget for new ones each month.

Here are some guidelines:

  • If you only need one tire and can’t afford to replace any others, buy the same brand and size as the three that remain on the car.
  • Buy the same type tire as the one you are replacing. If you had four all-weather tires on the car, buy another all-weather tire. Don’t switch to one off-road tire or any other mismatched tire.
  • If the tires on your car have staggered wheels (the tires – and in some cases also the wheels – are different sizes on the front of the car versus the rear), buy the same tire that’s on the opposite side of that axle. Each axle should have the same tire size and type.
  • If you can only buy one tire, buy the same OEM (original equipment) as the other three. Check the size carefully before you buy it; tires can look alike and still be different width sizes.

But what if you go ahead and purchase mismatched tires? Is it really that important?

In a word, yes! It may have solved the immediate cost issue but the long-term damage to the other three, and the car, will cost more later.

One new tire can also affect how the car handles because of the different depths of tire tread. The acceleration, cornering abilities, and stopping power of the car are under stress because of that new tire. Those components will begin to wear out before they should, and that is dangerous, especially in bad weather and at high speeds.

How many miles should tires last?

The fast answer is between 50,000 miles and 75,000 miles. But there is more to it than that. In considering the average, most people drive between 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year. That means the average good quality all-season tire will last somewhere between three and five years.

Even that depends on a number of other factors:

  • Road conditions:Tire wear also depends on the terrain and types of roads where you drive most often.
  • Driving habits: If you regularly accelerate hard, carry heavy loads, and aggressively drive over speed bumps and potholes, your tires will suffer.
  • Climate: Cold temperatures mean lower pressure in your tires, often leading to underinflation and flats. Very high temperatures cause the pavement to heat up, which means more friction between the tires and the road.
  • Care given the tires: Practice good tire maintenance habits and your tires will last longer.

What are four common symptoms of tire problems?

You want to protect the investment in your tires, so here are four things to pay attention to:

  • Uneven tire wear: First of all, tires do wear differently on each wheel. If you have the tires rotated regularly, you can even this out as much as possible. If you neglect this preventative maintenance, your tire can develop bald spots which can lead to blow outs. Plus the car will become more difficult to stop and the alignment will be affected.
  • Noises while driving: Listen to your tires while you’re driving. If the noises increase and decrease based on your speed, there is probably a problem with one or more tires. A tire with low pressure has more tire surface touching the road. This changes the sound while the car is moving.
  • Cracks or bulges: Extreme cold can cause a tire to stiffen and that leads to cracks or bulges in the tire. The sidewall can crack and then air gets between the lining of the tire and outer layer of rubber.
  • Losing air: All tires lose about one pound per square inch each month. If one or more of your tires are losing pressure more quickly than that, it’s time to find out why. You may need new tires installed. Or there may be a small puncture that can be repaired easily. Have us diagnose the air loss.

Replacing tires on your vehicle represents a significant investment depending on the type of tire, the size of the tire, and the brand. Four brand name all-season tires can cost roughly $600 or more, and four top brand summer tires could cost $1,800 or more.

Do I need a tire alignment after replacing the tires?

As a safety-conscious Virginia driver, you should take your tire maintenance seriously—even if you just bought a set of tires. While you might assume your new tires won't need any special attention for quite a while, there is one service they should receive before they leave the tire store—wheel alignment, which can significantly affect the overall performance of your new tires.

When you go to your tire store for a wheel alignment, the mechanic will also adjust your car's suspension. This way, you can be sure that your new tires are resting on the road at the correct angle. Thanks to this procedure, your new tires will wear properly, minimizing the risk of steering problems and reducing fuel consumption.

When you buy new tires, wheel alignment may not be a requirement, but getting them aligned as soon as possible is always a good idea. Having your tires aligned when you first get them will help you get the most out of your new tires. If you're installing new tires, be sure to schedule a wheel alignment service so that your old alignment doesn't affect your new tires.

How can you tell if your tires are worn out?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to save money on auto maintenance—as long as you don't take things too far. For example, you shouldn't try to extend your tires' life by using them when they're dangerously worn. Run-down treads can't create the traction your vehicle depends on, so you endanger yourself and your passengers if you drive with old tires.

If you aren't sure if your treads are still safe, know that testing isn't complicated or time-consuming. A penny is all that is required to check your treads. By performing the penny test described in the "Signs That It's Time for New Tires" section and following the other tips listed there, you can be the first to know if your tires are overdue for replacement.

While being aware of your remaining tread depth is a great first step toward taking your tires' well-being seriously, your older tires could encounter many other issues. Be sure to watch out for the following:

  • Cracks in your tire rubber—Virginia's hot summer weather can cause serious problems for older tires. These tires can even crack in perfect conditions, but heat and sunlight speed up that process.
  • Bulging side walls—Although any type of tire damage can shorten your tire's lifespan, some damage is fixable with a simple repair. That's not the case for sidewall bulges, which are one of the worst things that can happen to tires. Since these bulges can pop without warning, it's best to buy replacement tires before you need to deal with that situation.
  • Tires with uneven tread wear—Even if you've made a point to regularly schedule maintenance services like tire rotation, your wheels could still wear unevenly. If that's the case for your tires, you may be unable to avoid the need for replacement for much longer.

As soon as you notice any of these wheel issues, it's best to replace them. Instead of putting tire replacement off indefinitely, visit Hogan & Sons to take care of this vital service right away (and save money along the way)!

Does the tire brand actually matter?

While any car component is an investment, there are some situations where you can save money by buying a part that's "good enough." For example, you don't necessarily have to buy a name-brand windshield wiper. That said, some components are more critical than others, and a few car parts are more crucial than a good set of tires.

Buying cheap tires might help you save money in the short term, but they aren't as well-made as their better-known counterparts. This is a bigger issue than you might think, because a set of tires should last anywhere from three to five years. Your tires will be responsible for keeping you safe on the road during this period, so it's wise to buy the best tires available in your price range.

Hogan & Sons takes pride in stocking tires from all leading brands. When you visit one of our Virginia locations, you'll find tires from brands such as:

  • Bridgestone
  • Kumho
  • Firestone
  • Goodyear

These are just a few of the tire brands we have to offer. To learn more about the tires we sell, take a look at our online tire shop!

What happens if you drive with worn-out tires?

It's a fact of life—the older your tires are, the less effective they'll be on the road. Compared to brand-new tires, your worn-out tires will have poorer stopping power, provide a restricted grip, and deflate rapidly. Old tires are also highly susceptible to blowouts, which means you should be ready to replace them ASAP if you've been using them for more than three years.

There's no need to drive on worn-out tires. If you live in Northern Virginia, get your next set of tires at Hogan & Sons! We're the most trustworthy tire shop in the area, and we'll make sure you get the right tires for your vehicle.
